Insulation reduces unwanted heat loss or gain. It must be installed properly to work effectively. The intent of the NC Energy Code is that insulation be installed to a Grade 1 standard which is substantially free of gaps, voids and compressions.
Install insulation to fill the cavity. There should be no compression, gaps, or voids.
Blown ceiling insulation should be even with the appropriate depth in all areas of the ceiling. Attic rulers are required to show depth.
Insulation should fill the whole cavity. There should be no compression, gaps, voids, or misalignment.
Cut and split insulation around electrical, plumbing and mechanical components such as lighting fixtures, duct boots, wires, switches, receptacles and pipes.
